Bridge Information

The National Bridge inventory lists the Bartlett Road Bridge as being constructed in 2015. However, the 2015 contract only included site and substructure work. It appears that the abutments were replaced, and a Bailey Bridge was moved onto the site. Unfortunately, there is no public record of this, and it is not clear where the bridge was moved from. Note that the bridge that was there prior to the 2015 construction was not a truss bridge.

A Bailey Bridge is a type of prefabricated truss bridge that was developed by the British Military during the Second World War. These bridges were commonly used because they required no special tools or equipment to assemble, and the elements were light and small enough to be carried in trucks and moved by hand. The bridges were strong enough to carry tanks, and they were used extensively by British, Canadian, and American military engineering units. After the war, these bridges continued to be used to provide temporary crossings for pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
